Yusuf from Baghlan Chose Engineering Because of a Water Problem. On Earth Day, He Explains From COEP Pune.
Yusuf is from Baghlan, Afghanistan. He studies Civil Engineering at COEP Technological University in Pune. And on Earth Day he is standing in the campus green area thinking about home.
Not in a sad way. In the way that people think about the place they are working toward.
The Problem He Grew Up Watching
Baghlan is an agricultural province. The land needs water. For years, Yusuf watched his village live with a water problem that did not go away. The fields needed it. The animals needed it. Families walked long distances for clean water. It was not a crisis that appeared sometimes - it was a daily reality.
He watched it long enough to decide that someone needed to know how to properly fix it. Not with temporary solutions - with real engineering. Water systems, irrigation infrastructure, civil structures that last.
That decision brought him to COEP.
Why COEP Technological University Pune
COEP Technological University is one of India's oldest engineering institutions, established in 1854. Its Civil Engineering program covers water systems, structural design, irrigation engineering, and infrastructure development - exactly the disciplines Yusuf came here for.
Pune's engineering environment gives students contact with real infrastructure challenges. The problems being studied inside the classroom are the same problems being solved in the city around the campus.
How He Got Here
Yusuf applied through fn.mahacet.org - the Government of Maharashtra's official portal for international students. Engineering at COEP required no entrance exam. His 12th grade marks in Physics, Mathematics, and Chemistry were the basis for his application.
He applied directly on the portal. No agent. No middleman. The fees are fixed by the government - USD 50 eligibility and USD 1,150 processing - and listed on the portal before you pay anything.
Earth Day From Pune
Earth Day is 22 April every year. For most people it is a date on a calendar. For Yusuf it is a reminder of why he is in Pune studying Civil Engineering instead of still in Baghlan watching the problem continue.
Afghanistan's land and water need people who know how to take care of them. That knowledge is built through engineering education. Yusuf is building it at COEP, one year at a time.
Happy Earth Day from COEP Pune. fn.mahacet.org.
