I'm Studying Civil Engineering in India- And It Required No Entrance Test
There's a version of me, not too long ago, who had no idea that studying engineering at one of India's most prestigious universities was even possible for someone like me- a foreign national, far from home, with big dreams and very little clarity on where to pursue them.
Today, that version feels like a distant memory.
I am currently pursuing a Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering at COEP Technological University, Pune, Maharashtra- and I mean it sincerely when I say this has been one of the most enriching chapters of my life.
The Part That Surprised Me Most
No entrance test. Seriously.
As an international student, I was fully braced for competitive examinations, gruelling screening rounds, and months of anxious waiting. None of that happened. The Government of Maharashtra has a dedicated pathway for foreign candidates that makes the entire admission experience remarkably smooth and stress-free. I simply selected my course, my college, and got on with what actually matters- learning.
Life at COEP
COEP Technological University is not just old- it is storied. Established in 1854, it carries over 170 years of academic legacy on its campus along the banks of the Mutha river in Pune. Walking through its corridors feels like walking through history, except the labs are cutting-edge and the professors are anything but outdated.
Civil Engineering here is not a passive classroom experience. We work with live structural models, industry-standard software, and faculty who have real project exposure. Pune itself- a city growing vertically and horizontally every single year- is essentially our extended classroom. Infrastructure is happening all around us, and we are learning to read it.
Pune Chose Me Back
I had heard Pune called the Oxford of the East. I thought it was marketing. It is not.
The city has a rhythm that suits students perfectly- it is urban enough to keep you stimulated, calm enough to let you focus, and culturally so layered that every weekend feels like a small discovery. The food, the festivals, the mix of languages you hear on a single street- it is overwhelming in the best possible way.
On campus, my circle includes students from across South Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. We study together, argue about structural load calculations together, and eat vada pav together at 9 PM. That, honestly, is the education no syllabus can offer.
Would I Recommend This?
Without hesitation.
If you are an international student considering an engineering degree and you want a college with legacy, faculty with depth, a city with soul, and an admission process that does not penalise you for being from elsewhere- COEP Pune is worth every conversation you need to have with your parents about moving to India.
I made that move. My foundation- quite literally, given my specialisation- has never been stronger.
