What Happens After You Submit Your Application? The Complete Admission Journey

You have filled in the form and pressed submit. So, what happens next? This is exactly how your application moves from eligibility review to a confirmed seat, step by step, through the official Government of Maharashtra portal at fn.mahacet.org.

200+ Colleges 50+ Programs USD 1,200 One-Time Fee No Entrance Exam English Medium

Submitting your application can feel like the finish line. In reality, it is the starting gun. From here, your file moves through a clear, government-run process that turns your registration into a confirmed seat at a Maharashtra college.

The good news: there is no guesswork and no entrance exam. The whole journey runs through one official single-window portal, fn.mahacet.org, operated by the State Common Entrance Test Cell, Government of Maharashtra. Below, we break the journey into 3 phases and 13 simple steps, so you always know what is coming next.

Who This Journey Is For

This admission route is built for international category candidates only. Before you go further, find your category below. Each one applies to study in Maharashtra through the same portal.

  • Foreign National (FN): citizens of any country other than India.
  • Non-Resident Indian (NRI): Indian citizens living abroad with a valid NRI certificate.
  • OCI / PIO: Overseas Citizens of India and Persons of Indian Origin.
  • CIWGC: Children of Indian Workers in Gulf Countries.
  • Children of Seafarers: wards of Indian merchant navy personnel with a valid discharge certificate.
No MHT-CET needed. International category students are exempt from the MHT-CET entrance exam. Your admission is based on your qualifying examination marks and seat availability in the international quota.

Your Admission Journey at a Glance

Here is the full path on one timeline, so you can see how the three phases connect before we dive into the detail.

Phase 1: Application & Eligibility

This first phase is all about getting your application correctly registered and confirmed as eligible. Take your time here, because a clean, complete application moves through review much faster.

Phase 1 · Application & Eligibility
  • Register on fn.mahacet.orgCreate your account using your email address and a password.
  • Fill out your admission formAdd your personal details and education record (Grade X, XI, and XII), then upload every required document.
  • Select your course preferencesClick "Select Applied For," choose your degree level (Bachelor's or Master's), pick your course name and specialisation, and select your preferred colleges from the list that appears.
  • Pay the eligibility fee of USD 50Submit your application once the fee is paid.
  • Wait for the eligibility reviewThe CET Cell department team reviews your application. This takes roughly 7 to 10 working days.
  • Receive your Provisional Eligibility LetterThis letter is issued once you are found eligible, and it unlocks the next phase.
Smart move: the portal recommends completing the USD 50 eligibility check first. It confirms which courses you qualify for before you commit the larger registration fee in Phase 2.

Phase 2: College Allotment & Admission

With your Provisional Eligibility Letter in hand, this phase turns your eligibility into an actual college allotment. This is where your marks and preferences come together to decide your seat.

Phase 2 · College Allotment & Admission
  • Pay the one-time processing fee of USD 1,150Pay this on fn.mahacet.org. College allotment begins only after this payment is made.
  • Enter your subject marksThis step applies to BTech and MTech courses only, and is done after the USD 1,150 fee is paid.
  • Receive your college allocationYour allotment is generated from your marks and your course preferences.
  • Pay your college feesPay either online or directly to the college to lock in your seat.

Understanding the two layers of fees

It helps to keep the costs separate in your mind. There are two layers. First, a one-time government fee to the CET Cell of USD 1,200 in total (USD 50 eligibility plus USD 1,150 processing). Second, your annual college tuition, which is paid separately to the college and varies by course and institution.

Phase 3: College Reporting

This is the final stretch. Once your seat is allotted and your college fees are paid, you complete your admission in person at the college itself.

Phase 3 · College Reporting
  • Report to your allotted collegeOnce your college is allocated and fees are paid, report to the college with your Provisional Eligibility Letter, your College Allotment Letter, and all original documents you uploaded during registration.
  • Document verificationThe college verifies and approves your documents in person.
  • Admission confirmedYour admission is officially confirmed once the college completes document verification.
Bring the originals. Keep printed copies of your Provisional Eligibility Letter and College Allotment Letter, and carry the original versions of everything you uploaded online. Verification is done against the originals.

Documents to Keep Ready

Having your paperwork ready in advance keeps every phase moving. Most candidates will need the following. NRI, OCI, and CIWGC applicants may need a few extra category-specific documents.

Academic documents

  • 10th / SSC / O-Level mark sheet and certificate
  • 12th / HSC / A-Level mark sheet and certificate
  • Equivalence certificate from the relevant authority in your country
  • Migration or transfer certificate from your last institution
  • Character certificate from your last institution

Personal and financial documents

  • Valid passport with at least 2 years of validity remaining
  • Passport-size photographs with a white background
  • Birth certificate
  • Bank statement showing sufficient funds
  • Sponsorship letter, if someone else is funding your studies

All documents must be in English or officially translated. Original documents are verified in person at the college.

Visa note: most international students also need an Indian student visa, which you apply for at your nearest Indian Embassy or Consulate using your college admission letter. Nepali citizens are exempt under the 1950 Indo-Nepal Treaty and can travel on a passport and admission letter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to take the MHT-CET exam?

No. International category students (FN, NRI, OCI/PIO, CIWGC, and children of seafarers) are exempt from MHT-CET. Admission is based on your qualifying examination marks and seat availability in the international quota.

Is the fee refundable?

No. The State CET Cell fee is not refundable. The portal recommends completing the USD 50 eligibility check first, since it confirms which courses you qualify for before you commit the USD 1,150 registration fee.

Can I pay online, and in my own currency?

Payment is accepted online only, through the CCAvenue gateway built into the portal. It supports major international credit and debit cards, and the currency-conversion facility lets you pay the USD fee in your local currency at the prevailing rate.

Can I apply to more than one college?

Yes. Through the single-window system you can apply to several colleges and courses. You may receive more than one offer, but you can confirm only one seat.

Why might my application be placed on hold?

Applications are usually held for missing documents or a pending verification step. Check your dashboard, upload anything that is missing, and contact the technical helpline if the issue continues.

Will my degree be recognised internationally?

Degrees from AICTE-approved and UGC-recognised Maharashtra colleges are recognised globally. Always confirm that your chosen college holds the relevant accreditation before you accept your seat.
